My Shoulders Already Said No

My shoulders are already saying no, and my mouth is still negotiating.
That’s the strange middle-of-the-week tension, isn’t it?
The body has already voted—tightening, lifting, bracing—while the mind keeps drafting a kinder-sounding version of “yes.”
Sometimes we negotiate because we’re trying to be good.
Sometimes we negotiate because we’re trying to be safe.
Sometimes we negotiate because we learned, early on, that our “no” had consequences—so we softened it, buried it, dressed it up in productivity, or delayed it until we couldn’t feel it anymore.
But your body doesn’t argue in paragraphs.
It speaks in posture. In breath. In jaw. In the way your shoulders creep toward your ears like they’re trying to disappear.
And here’s the gentle truth: a somatic “no” isn’t a character flaw. It’s information.
It might be telling you:
- This pace isn’t sustainable.
- This relationship dynamic is costing me.
- I’m overextending again.
- I’m trying to earn belonging by abandoning myself.
You don’t have to make it dramatic.
You don’t have to turn it into a confrontation.
You can start with the smallest honest shift: listening.
Because self-worth isn’t only what you believe in your mind.
Self-worth is what you practice with your body—especially when you’re tempted to override yourself.
And if you’re faith-forward, faith-spacious, or simply spiritually curious, here’s one way to hold it:
Maybe wisdom is not only something you think.
Maybe wisdom is something you can feel—like a quiet, steady “enough” settling into your chest.
Tiny Practice (30–60 seconds):
“Shoulders Down, Truth Up”
- Unclench your jaw. (Even 5%.)
- Drop your shoulders one inch. Let gravity help.
- Exhale like you’re fogging a mirror. Slow it down just a touch.
- Silently ask: “What would be kind… and true?”
Don’t force an answer. Just notice what happens inside.
If you feel even a hint of relief, that’s a signal.
If you feel resistance, that’s also a signal.
Either way, you’re back in relationship with yourself.
Reflection Questions
- Where do I feel “yes” and “no” in my body—today, right now?
- What am I afraid will happen if I stop negotiating and tell the simpler truth?
- What would it look like to honor my body’s message by 1% this week?
- Who benefits when I override myself—and what does it cost me?
You don’t have to solve your whole life on a Wednesday.
You just have to come back to your body long enough to remember:
I’m allowed to be honest. I’m allowed to be kind. I’m allowed to be both.
