Friday Pause: Grounding in the Safety of This Moment

Dear friend,

Welcome to our second Friday Pause: Rest, Reset, Digest, a gentle meadow where we gather each week to breathe, soften, and heal. Whether you’re a client weaving this practice into our shared journey, a past client rediscovering your inner calm, or a cherished colleague or friend pausing alongside us, your presence fills this space with warmth. Every Friday, I offer a somatic and attachment-based practice to help you rest your body, reset your heart, and digest life’s moments with care. Today, we’re grounding in the safety of this very moment, letting our senses be our guide.

Picture yourself in a quiet clearing, where the grass sways softly and the air carries a hint of peace. Your body knows how to find safety here—it’s in the simple act of noticing, of being present. In somatic healing, grounding through our senses calms the nervous system, inviting the “rest and digest” state where tension eases. From an attachment perspective, feeling safe in this moment builds trust, like a warm embrace from someone who sees you fully. Let’s step into this clearing together, dear friend, and let safety wrap around us like a soft blanket.

Why Grounding Matters

Grounding is a gift—a way to anchor yourself when life feels like a storm. By noticing what you see, touch, hear, smell, and taste, you tell your nervous system, “I’m here, and I’m okay.”  For some, grounding feels like coming home; for others, it’s a new path, perhaps shadowed by past moments of unease. Wherever you are, this practice meets you with kindness, inviting you to pause in a way that feels safe.

Today’s Practice: A Sensory Grounding Pause

This somatic practice is designed to help you feel present and safe, rooted in your senses. It’s trauma-informed and flexible, so move through it at your own pace, knowing rest is yours to claim.

  1. Create Your Haven: Find a space where you feel supported—sitting on a cozy chair, standing by an open window, or even in a busy place like a café. If it helps, wrap yourself in a blanket or imagine a warm, golden light around you. This is your clearing, your moment.
  2. Soften Your Presence: Take three slow breaths, letting each exhale be a sigh of release. If deep breathing feels intense, try soft, natural breaths, like a breeze through leaves. Close your eyes or soften your gaze to signal safety to your body.
  3. Engage Your Senses: Move slowly through this 5-4-3-2-1 practice, lingering on what feels soothing:
    • Notice 5 things you see: A flickering candle, a tree’s shadow, the curve of a mug, a splash of color, a loved one’s photo.
    • Notice 4 things you can touch: Your soft sweater, a cool glass, the air on your skin, a cushion’s texture.
    • Notice 3 things you hear: A bird’s song, the hum of a fan, your own breath’s rhythm.
    • Notice 2 things you smell: Fresh coffee, a hint of rain, or a memory of lavender.
    • Notice 1 thing you taste: A sip of water, a lingering mint, or an imagined sweetness.

If any sense feels overwhelming, focus on one that calms, like the feel of your feet or a single sound.

  1. Listen to Your Heart: Ask yourself, What feels safe right now? It might be a sensation (warmth in your hands), a thought (“I’m here”), or an action (holding a warm mug). Let your body’s wisdom guide you, without judgment.
  2. Reflect with Care: Ask, What helps me feel safe in this moment? Maybe it’s this practice, a quiet space, or the thought of someone you love. Write your answer in a journal, whisper it to yourself, or hold it quietly. If the question stirs unease, let it rest—you can return later.
  3. Close with Kindness: Offer yourself a moment of gratitude—for pausing, for showing up. You might say inwardly, “Thank you for being here,” or feel a gentle nod to your heart. This builds a tender connection to yourself, like a seed of trust.

If grounding feels challenging, that’s okay. Some days, safety is simply noticing the longing for it. That noticing is a brave step. For more support, download my Restful Pause Worksheet or try my Mindful Ease Meditation from my resource library.

Your Invitation

Friday Pause is our shared sanctuary, a place where we weave rest and connection, one moment at a time. Whether you’re grounding in therapy, exploring self-care, or sharing this practice in your own work, you’re part of this gentle community. Each week, I’ll share a new practice on my blog, social media, or via email to deepen your healing.

Today, I invite you to carry this grounding forward. What’s one small way you can feel safe this weekend? Maybe it’s savoring a quiet walk, turning off your phone for a moment, or whispering, “I’m enough.” Share your word or sensation for “safety”—like “stillness” or “the hum of my fan”—on my social media with #FridayPause or email me at info@healingservant. Your share might be a light for someone else, like passing a warm candle in our shared meadow.

If you’re ready to weave grounding into your healing, book a session to explore somatic and attachment-based work in a safe space. Curious about my approach? Visit my therapy page. For my colleagues, I’d be honored if you shared Friday Pause with your communities.

Thank you for pausing with me, dear friend. Your presence makes this clearing brighter. Here’s to grounding, resting, and growing together, one Friday at a time.

With heartfelt care,
