When Peace Feels Unsafe

“I just want things to be calm.”

That’s what we say — and we mean it. But for many of us, calm is the hardest thing to receive.

We’re not broken. We’re patterned.

Our nervous systems were trained to feel “safe” in urgency, vigilance, and survival.

In trauma recovery, there’s a moment when things get better — and instead of relief, we feel… off.

The absence of stress feels like emptiness. Joy feels suspicious. Love feels unsafe.

In Somatic Experiencing, we don’t push peace. We befriend it.
We titrate slowly.
We learn to notice when the body starts bracing, and we soften instead of shaming ourselves.

You don’t need to “earn” peace.
But your nervous system may need to learn it.
This week’s Porch Prompt is:
What part of you isn’t sure peace is safe yet?

Let your answer come gently. Not as a problem to fix — but a story to listen to.

This porch was built for your whole self, even the parts that still flinch when things feel good.

With deep compassion,

Kristi
